This is the first play written and published by Romanian artist and iconographer Niculae Goicea. Originally a handwritten Romanian manuscript, it has been painstakingly translated into English and carefully formatted for e-book publication.Available exclusively on the Kindle for a limited time.Author’s Introduction: “How many times you heard someone saying: When I will retire, I’ll have plenty of time to relax, play golf with my pals, or go fishing It’s only natural. What could be more relaxing than spending a whole day on a river bank or lake, fishing, drinking beer, socializing with your friends, or letting your thoughts roam free, remembering happy events from the pastThis play shows that you can’t escape so easily. There’s always someone watching and plotting against you, no matter how innocent your actions may be. You are not in control of what you intend to do or achieve. You’re constantly under pressure to convert and behave differently when your actions come into conflict with someone else's interpretation of reality. Our two fishermen just want to have a quiet afternoon, catch some fish, chat, and drink some beer. If they catch enough, perhaps they’ll have a fish barbecue on the spot. But along the way a mysterious old man with dark tales of the river, and a group of fanatical young women with a penchant for song, turn their day trip into something quite unexpected. These normal people are thrust into extraordinary circumstances as they try to make sense of a reality that threatens their way of life, their manhood, and even their very lives. In vain, they turn to the Bible, philosophy, and TV documentaries to explain their predicament. The fishermen encounter this series of challenges without complaint. They don’t blame gods for their misfortune. They try to find a lucrative way out of each situation, with maximum profit for themselves. Life is what it is, they accept their destiny and try to make it just a little bit more bearable. They succeed not by heroics, and not by fighting for a special cause while being blinded by ideologies or dogma. They don’t try to change others for the better, because no one really knows what’s best or how to make a clear distinction between right and wrong. Life is a mysterious game with a specific set of rules. Most of the time it requires strict obedience but other times, finding ways to circumvent these rules is the only way to succeed. What is right and what is wrong is such a relative thing, with so many ideologies fighting with tragic results to impose their way of thinking, and so many behavioral norms to be obeyed that in the end, all of them are nothing other than human folly.Finding a way to survive while passing through the labyrinth of human laws and norms is the real heroism of everyday life, especially if you can have some fun in the process like our heroes do.”Caution: Reflections on male sexuality, Christian allegory, and satirical irreverence make this absurd comedy potentially shocking to certain women, philosophers, priests, football fans, animal rights activists, vegans, and fish!
